Pet Obedience Class Descriptions
Pet Obedience:
Puppy Kindergarten
- Prerequisites: Dogs should be between 10 weeks and 4 1/2 months of age.
- Description: This class is for pet dogs or future competition obedience dogs. A puppy kindergarten class is very important for puppies to provide socialization with other puppies and different people. In addition to providing socialization, this class teaches basic behaviors such as attention on name, sit, down, come, and walking on a loose leash. Additionally, behavior problems (such as mouthing, jumping, chewing, and housetraining) are addressed. Please note: week 1 is an orientation WITHOUT your dog. Please bring to class:proof of initial distemper and parvo vaccinations.
Beginner 1
- Prerequisites: Dogs should be 5 months or older with no prior training, or dog should be a Puppy Kindergarten class graduate.
- Description: This class is for pet dogs. This class teaches basic behaviors such as attention on name, sit, down, come, walking on a loose leash, stay, leave-it, drop something from mouth, and go to place. Behavior problems will be addressed as needed. Dogs will learn manners around other dogs and people (e.g., wait at door, sit for greeting).
Please bring to class: a variety of high value food treats, treat pouch, tug toy, 6 foot leash, dog mat, and a hungry dog.
Beginner 2
- Prerequisites: Dogs should be a Beginner 1 class graduate
- Description:This class is for pet dogs. This class will solidify the behaviors leaned in the Beginner 1 class. Reliability of the behaviors will be improved by working with distractions and in new places. Distance control will be worked on for applicable behaviors such as stay and come. Weather permitting, some of the classes may be conducted outside the building and around Eatontown. Please bring to class:a variety of high value food treats, treat pouch, tug toy, 6 foot leash, dog mat, and a hungry dog.
Therapy & Canine Good Citizen (CGC) - Combined
- Prerequisites: Dog needs a solid sit and down stay, recall, and loose leash walking or heeling. Needs to have minimally graduated from a Beginner 1 class, preferably a Beginner 2 class.
- Description: This class prepares your dog to pass a standardized therapy dog test which will enable you to volunteer wherever therapy dogs are welcomed. Therapy dogs are traditionally found in hospitals & rehabilitative facilities as well as in hospice & nursing homes. Additionally, libraries and schools encourage visiting therapy dog teams which educate children about pet care and safety and offer the opportunity of participating in the National Kids Read Program. - This class will also teach you the exercises needed to earn the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certificate. Please see the AKC web site for more information on the CGC certification program: http://www.akc.org/events/cgc/index.cfm.
- Actual CGC and therapy dog testing will be offered to all class graduates.
